Video Timeline Control & Integration with Hype’s Main Timeline

I’m not sure how this fits into the current development cycle, but I wanted to share this as a small workflow and usability thought.

What do you want to see in Hype?

More timeline-based control and synchronization for video elements, so videos can stay aligned with Hype’s main timeline rather than behaving as semi-independent media objects, as it currently seems. A similar approach for audio elements would be equally valuable.

Ideally, it would be great if:

• Video playback (play, pause, seek, scrub) could be bound directly to the main timeline

• Scrubbing the timeline would also scrub the video frame-accurately

• Timeline-based in/out points could be defined for video segments

• Video could optionally behave like a timeline-driven visual layer (similar to keyframed elements)

This would help video feel more like a first-class timeline element, not just an embedded asset.

Have you found a workaround for this problem?

Only partial and somewhat fragile ones:

• JavaScript-based syncing tied to timeline events (Hype’s JavaScript integration is powerful and very valuable, but a more natural timeline-level sync would make this workflow more enjoyable and accessible, especially from an instructional design perspective)

• Manually splitting videos and triggering them via actions

• Converting video to image sequences or sprite sheets (a very valuable Hype feature for many use cases, not limited to video, but potentially heavy and inefficient when used for every video)

As discussed in existing forum threads (e.g. graphics not staying in sync with video on the timeline), current approaches can work well in many cases, but a more direct timeline-level integration could make the workflow smoother, more intuitive, and more enjoyable.

Are there examples of other apps with this feature? Or, have you seen examples of this elsewhere on the web? (Please include a URL)

Video and motion tools naturally integrate video directly into their timelines. On the web this is still rare, but in Hype there already seems to be a partial foundation for this kind of interaction, which is actually what encouraged this request.

A lightweight, web-focused timeline integration could be a big step forward.

How high of a priority is this for you?

With Final Cut Pro moving to Apple Creator Studio, I'm a little concerned about the future of the app. If Apple is transitioning to a “Hipster Whale” style, where the iWork apps remain free and they still get some new features occasionally, but advanced AI features cost money, that's not so terrible. Yet, if Final Cut Pro eventually becomes about AI features that are locked behind a paywall, that's a problem.

So, the point is that I was thinking about alternatives. And in general, I've been wondering how Hype could work as a video editor. It does feel pretty close. Already I've been using Hype to add advanced animation to my videos. What if I didn't have to do that with a green background and Final Cut Pro?

Intensifies is an app that I started building with Hype, a timeline app within a timeline app, and there did seem to be potential. Yet, that's not video editing. It was an idea for captioning. I don't know the difficulty of the video issues with Hype. Considering the audio export issue has been around for a long time, getting Hype to become a full non-linear editor for video seems like a tough job.

I'm waiting to see what happens next week. Final Cut Pro, Pixelmator, and Hype are three big reasons (amongst others) why I haven't switched to Linux. But if I don't like what I see next week, I might have to get serious about switching.

Thanks for the request!

(It looks like you've explored the options and found some of the possible workarounds in the forums.)

This is definitely one issue where "great is the enemy of good" - in that HTML video doesn't provide enough primitives for great synchronization, but perhaps a good (albeit flawed) solution would be of benefit.
