Who’s interested in joining another online meetup? It’s a chance for some shop talk and a meet and greet. If you’re shy, feel free to join with just your voice, though it will be a video meeting. If anyone wants to screen share a project or discuss a problem, you’re more than welcome. It’s casual, with no big agenda.
Please let me know your availability by participating in the poll below.
Looking forward to seeing your responses!
I did that the other day for another software I use, and it was fun.
I would like to participate in an event within the next two weeks.
I am interested, but would prefer a later date (after summer).
I prefer to keep interactions limited to our lovely forum.
I was thinking of doing an online class, where there would be a live chat and people could ask questions. I'm not sure if people would be interested in that though. So, none of the options in the poll really match.
It feels like this community is on-hold until Tumult reaches another significant milestone with Hype. In other words, I think an online class would be more effective if Hype 5 was launched — or at least announced.
Yeah, I agree with you about using Hype 5 to reinvigorate the community and generate excitement around the product again, hope to see that happen. However, meanwhile, I believe there are people still using Tumult Hype 4 daily, so why not organize a meetup?
Well, I'm thinking… at least with the YouTube livestream… it would be more effective if there's more activity with Hype. If I try to teach a class in Hype, and no one shows up, that's not going to be a good video. Worse, my channel is mainly about Crossy Road these days. The questions might be… how to unlock the Motorbike Cow?
But for a small Hype get-together, up to 32 people on a FaceTime call sounds like it could fun.
True, the intention of the meetup was not specifically about teaching. Maybe sharing some tips or five-ten minute demos of a solution. The intention here is more casual and to bring the existing community together. I had some contact with community members, and it appears that everyone is pursuing their own little path and use case for Tumult Hype. It could be nice to engage in some casual discussions about how everyone is utilizes it, sharing some nice projects, and pain points, and discussing workarounds and said solutions. BTW I'd be already more than happy if we get 10 people online and maybe more with the no camera feed necessary policy.
The workaround I've been considering is making my own web game development software, as Hype is really close but not quite there.
So, then I think… what doesn't Hype do that would be necessary to make good web games?
Constant Collision Detection (CCD) — but I'm not sure if the recent Matter.js update fixes that problem. Also, I'm not sure if I would use Matter.js if I was creating my own game engine. It's possible I might pick Matter.js, as it's pretty good, but there are some issues.
Elements don't bounce indefinitely — It's easier to create a workaround to momentum loss than writing a whole new app.
Doesn't export to PWA — This feature should have been here years ago. But, Apple only recently had the necessary support for basic Progressive Web Apps. (Also, what an uninspiring name. The “P” should be dropped and just call them Web Apps.)
Game controls — Again, easier to add this manually than to create a whole game engine.
Animation features — Joints, Bones, Particles
Spawning — I think you mentioned that you didn't like how Hype handles symbols. Hype Symbols are kinda awkward. I don't use them often.
Easier to use the Physics API — I already wrote something to improve things, but people don't seem to care.
But in general, 10 people hanging out, chatting about Hype could be fun. Personally, I enjoy not having to use Zoom, or WebEx, or Microsoft Teams, or Slack anymore.
That choice doesn't work because I'm still considering running a Hype livestream… which would be something beyond this forum. Also, I think there was something of a European get-together of Hype developers. While I didn't attend, that seemed like a fun event.
I think a more suitable choice is…
◯You're extremely discouraged with the current state of Hype, and don't feel like talking about it right now. Furthermore, you've so sick of the corporate environment that the mere thought of using “teleconferencing” software has a negative effect on your wellbeing… and yet maybe you'll do something nice on YouTube if you get around to it.
It is quite the niche category, so it's understandable your poll doesn't reflect that situation.
The last one of these meet-up was great. It was really nice to physiclly chat to everyone who attended and get to know each other. It was relaxed and not structured around any ridged criteria.
I for one really look forward to the next one.
@Photics, come to it. But in the mean time maybe set up your own thread for your live stream or what ever with the criteria you want to discuss and also teach and invite people to. I don't see why there can only be one such thing people tune into..
It goes back to an earlier comment. Online meetups regarding Hype might be more effective when there's something exciting going on with Hype. But also, maybe Tumult should host another Conference to get that excitement going again.
Getting slightly out of scope of my intention, I just wanted to casually talk to some people who also use Hype. I am a user and not the marketing department for Tumult. I just ran this poll to "drink a beer" with like-minded fellow users and show and tell if anybody feels like it
So, given that most want to meet after Summer… how about: 2024-09-06T17:30:00Z→2024-09-06T19:00:00Z
We can use Zoom, Google meet or Butter for the group call.
I picked a date later in the evening in Europe so our American friends don't have to join too early and we Europeans don't have to get up in the middle of the night. I am open for suggestions if there is an even better sweet spot.
