That is a good guide.
Dealing with iframes in 2011, I can say they earned their poor reputation. But browsers have significantly improved their implementations in the last ~7 years.
(That said, I am dealing with a problem where in a certain environment, webkit appears to be throttling iframe performance for some unknown reason 
. But this is really only noticeable on old hardware with an older OS)
