I am trying to paste javascript that was prepared for me, into a new untitled function without success. There is a cursor, flashing but nothing gets pasted.
Is there some kind of setting to permit this, or...?

You'll just want to move the cursor within the { } brackets (like on line 4). Outside the brackets does not work, since that's not part of the function that will be invoked.

Reading this I have to say that I never have understood why the cursor starts below the bracket 
yeah, this is a bug. I don't recall the whole history but I know I tried to fix it at some point and hit some unexpected complication... I added a +1
