One of my answers was a link to the "iOS-Specific Considerations" page of the Apple Developer site re: Audio & Video. iOS does not allow volume to be set by JavaScript - that includes muting. Just below is the link:

Unfortunately Hype's built-in controls can not be accessed by JavaScript (at least that I'm aware of).
