In the hype Gallery there is this website : http://www.michaeljohann.com. I’m able to do this with one image, setting it to height:100vh and width: 100vw but anything i try to get beneath it just stacks it on top of it. Does this have something to do with the z-index?

no, his personal site was created by hand and using a jQuery plugin for the effects.
He has however created some examples here in Hype
